1846 - Iowa is the 30th state admitted to the union on December 28th 1848 - William Garrison arrives and lays claim to 14000 acres 1848 - Garrison builds cabin at location now know as 500 North Front Street 1848 - John Haney builds cabin 900 feet north of Garrison's 1849 - Allamakee County organized on January 15th 1849 - First official post office established on August 21 1849 - Harriet Tubman escapes from slavery on the "Underground Railroad" on December 6th 1850 - Population of Lansing is 80 residents 1851 - Lansing platted by John Haney and H.H. Houghton 1851 - Harriet Hosmer wins race to top of bluff now known as Mount Hosmer in June 1851 - Father Hore establishes Catholic Church at Wexford 1851 - County Seat relocated to Columbus 1852 - First newspaper in Lansing (Lansing Intelligencer) publishes first issue on November 23rd 1853 - Delia D. Purdy opens first public school in Lansing 1855 - First church constructed in Lansing (Catholic) 1858 - Minnesota is the 32nd state admitted to the union on May 11th 1858 - "Old Ice House" built on north Front Street 300 feet north of John Haney cabin 1860 - Population of Lansing is 800 residents 1860 - South Carolina secedes from the United States on December 20th 1861 - The Confederate States of America is formed on February 4th. 1861 - Abraham Lincoln inaugurated on on March 4th 1861 - Attach on Fort Sumpter on April 12th marks the begin of the Civil War 1861 - Courthouse built in North Capoli 1861 - Kerndt Brothers build store at 4th and Main 1862 - Abraham Lincoln signs the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22nd 1863 - Slavery ends with Emancipation Proclamation enactment on January 1st 1863 - Stone School lots purchased on May 4th for $225 1863 - Stone School construction begins. Englehorn and Beissell awarded contract for $5,000. 1863 - Abraham Lincoln delivers Gettysburg Address on November 19th 1864 - Stone School completed on July 2nd (40' x 56' with 14' x 30' entryway) 1864 - David and Helen Judson accept contracts on August 24th as first teachers in Stone School. 1865 - Confederacy begins to fall in January 1865 - Abraham Lincoln assasinated at Ford's Theater on April 12th 1865 - Jefferson Davis captured on May 10th 1865 - Stone School cistern and pump constructed on September 15th 1866 - Courthouse "raided" on June 9th 1867 - Lansing incorporated as a city on July 1st (population 1538) 1867 - Lansing takes South Lansing and North Capoli additions into corporate boundaries on July 3rd 1867 - Stone School South 2-story addition built (30' x 30') E. B. Bascom awarded contract for $2,000. 1868 - Kerndt Grain Elevator constructed 1870 - Population of Lansing is 1775 residents 1871 - Lansing first fire department organized (Hope Fire Company) 1871 - Great Chicago Fire 1871 - Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church built at Fifth Street and North Street 1872 - Railroad reaches Lansing from Dubuque on May 8 1875 - Population of Lansing is 2280 residents 1875 - Carriage House and Livery Stable built at 2nd Street and John Streets 1876 - Alexander Graham Bell invents the telephone on March 10 1876 - Custer defeated at Little Big Horn on Sunday, June 25 1877 - Lansing Artesian Well Company was organized and proceeded to have a well drilled at Main and 3rd 1879 - Thomas Edison invents the lightbulg 1881 - President James Garfield assassinated 1885 - Lansing's "Great Fire" destroys much of the 200 Block of Main Street on May 23rd 1885 - Immaculate Conception Church constructed 1886 - Stone School External stairs removed 1890 - Stone School steam heating replaced fire stoves 1892 - Stone School West 2-story addtion built (roughly 38' x 38'). Grant Ladd awarded the contract for $3194.71. 1894 - Stone School floors replaced in 6 rooms and 2 hallways 1895 - New Albin incorporated as a town on April 18th 1898 - City of New York created by five boroughs 1899 - First pearl button factory was started by Mr. J.M. Turner in May 1901 - President William McKinley assassinated at Buffalo world's fair 1903 - Lansing water works system expanded including Mount Hosmer resevoir 1903 - Orville and Wilbur Wright make first flight at Kitty Hawk, NC on December 17th 1905 - Albert Einstein presents the theory of relativity (e=mc2) 1907 - Stone School boiler upgraded by Gilbertson and Schaefer for $425 1908 - First Model T Ford introduced 1908 - City water and sewer extended to Stone School 1908 - Stone School indoor restroom facilities built 1909 - Stone School new heating plant built by La Crosse Construction for $2,665 ($2880 original bid) 1909 - Stone School retaining wall built by Fred Carlson for $81.83 ($126.19 original bid) 1910 - Upper Iowa Power Company begins furnishing power to Lansing 1911 - World's first overland airmail, from Des Moines, Iowa, to Chicago 1913 - Stone School has first telephone installed 1913 - Stone School has first electric lights installed 1914 - World War I begins with the assasination of Austrian archduke Francis Ferdinan in Sarajevo on June 28th 1914 - Interstate Bridge Company incorporated 1915 - Lansing voters pass $25,000 bond for new High School 1916 - Population of Lansing is around 1500 residents 1916 - New Lansing High School is occupied 1916 - Stone School becomes elementary 1918 - World War I ends with Allied Victory on Novenber 11th (Armistice Day) 1923 - Lansing buys Mount Hosmer and dedicates the park as a WWI memorial 1927 - Mount Hosmer lookout constructed 1929 - Blackhawk Bridge construction begins on March 5th 1929 - New York Stock Market crashes to an all time low on October 29th (referred to as "Black Tuesday"), signalling the start of the Great Depression. 1931 - Highway 9 paved through Lansing 1931 - Blackhawk Bridge completed on May 23rd and was dedicated on June 17th 1937 - Lock and Dam No. 8 completed in Genoa 1938 - Memorial Town hall constructed 1938 - Lock and Dam No. 9 completed in Lynxville 1941 - United States attacked by Japan at Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1944 - United States and Allied forces land in Normandy France on June 6th (D-Day) 1945 - Winneshiek Brige damaged by ice on March 18th 1945 - Germany surrenders unconditionally on May 4th 1957 - Bridges re-opened to Wisconsin on May 30th 1961 - Kee High School built 1963 - President John Kennedy assasinated in Dallas, TX on November 22nd 1964 - The United States begins military presence in Vietnam on August 7th 1973 - The last of American forces leave Vietnam on March 29th 1973 - St. George High School closes 1973 - Eastern Allamakee School District buys St. George High School from Immaculate Conception 1973 - Stone School vacated at the end of the school year
